“a science of combat” – from Ars Electronica catalogue
"Gambiarra" is a word that only exists in Brazilian Portuguese. It indicates informal uses and technological solutions to everyday life and infrastructure problems. Surreptitious electrical connections and water services diversions in areas with public sanitation problems or using brillo pads as TV aerials are some examples of common "gambiarras" in Brazil. The Gambiologia Collective transforms this repertoire into a science of combat. It promotes workshops, urban interventions, debates and exhibitions that stimulate the use and the reinvention of obsolete, broken or discarded devices. The jury recocgnizes its work and action methodology, directed at the critical and creative use of media, and decided to award Gambiologia as a process and strategy rather than as specific art works.

Campus Party 2011: um oferecimento Gambiologia e UOL
O Universo Online nos visitou durante a palestroficina na Campus Party e publicou uma versão "fina" do nosso D.I.Y. "Como construir um bouquet de LEDs", tema da speed workshop realizada. Confira algumas imagens abaixo ou clique aqui para ver todas.
O espírito de Jean Baptiste nos acompanhou mais uma vez. A Campus Party sofreu um apagão de uma hora durante a oficina, e somente nossas pequenas luminárias de LEDs ficaram acesas yeah!
O trabalho a seguir foi o vencedor da workshop, premiado com catálogo+camiseta+bottoms da Gambiólogos.

Ficou bem legal este post da amiga Lisa Kori Chung sobre a Gambiologia, no blog dela que documenta "a year of traveling through electronic art". É sempre bom ler comentários dos outros sobre nosso trabalho, principalmente em inglês. :^)
"In contrast to the other work with hardware, hacking and recycling I came across during my travels– i.e. instrument building and circuit bending–, the work of Gambiologia is not just focused on subverting the uses of or finding a new functions for objects, but also on the physical juxtaposition of salvaged objects themselves. These things include but aren’t limited to LED displays, lamps, toys and household appliances. The resulting reassemblages are laced with common themes: artful clutter, stickers, creative incorportation of lighting, exposed mechanisms, yellow and black striped tape, and appearances of the mythical figure Jean Baptiste Gambièrre."
A Lisa é a terceira na foto acima, tirada da oficina do Lucas em agosto do ano passado. Os outros ilustres são: Lu Tanure, Panetone, Roberta Paiva, Lucas Mafra, Vanessa Michelis e Carou Araújo. Eu sou esse velho (barbudo) no meio.
